Who are we?
Spiritual Wholeness Consulting Inc. is a federally incorporated business with its head office in Nova Scotia. President and owner of the company is the Rev. John Tonks, B.TH, DPM(Acadia Divinity College) with over thirty years experience in helping people discover their spiritual centre.
We believe that all people have been created in the image of God and that we are all restless until we find our centre. It was Victor Frankl a psychiatrist and founder of logotherapy who stated; "Humans live in three dimensions: the somatic, the mental, and the spiritual. The spiritual dimension cannot be ignored, for it's what makes us human." - Victor E. Frankl, The Doctor and the Soul (Second Vintage Books, 1986) p.xvi.
For many people their spirituality is synonymous with their religious beliefs and practices. For a growing number of individuals in our modern world spirituality is less conscious and has nothing to do with religion. Yet all of us face very deep and significant spiritual questions in our lives. Sometimes the struggle with these questions can lead us in directions within ourselves we would rather not go. I have encountered a number of individuals over the years whose root cause of their discontent or illness was neither psychological nor physical but spiritual because they were not able to be in touch with the centre of their spiritual nature. When they treated all aspects of their being; somatic, mental and spiritual, they return to holistic health. Our holistic approach to spirituality is one which seeks to help our clients identify those aspects of their lives which need the help of a medical doctor, psychologist, or spiritual consultant or perhaps all three. We are not medical doctors or psychologists. These are people we would welcome working with to bring a holistic approach to those who seek our help. We are spiritual guides who understand the deep questions of life because we have experienced and worked with them ourselves and have a history of helping others to find their answers.
It was Socrates who hundreds of years ago said, "know thyself." To know ones self we must be willing to enter the depths of our souls. To ask the deep questions of life and to face the answers. Who am I? Do I have a reason or purpose? How do I live beyond this loss in my life? These are a few of the spiritual questions which we may have to face at sometime in our life. Most of us cannot walk this journey alone but we need help. We can help!
Employers too have a stake in helping their employees have the opportunity to develop their spiritual side. Again we are not speaking here of religion or its practice but something which moves beyond the limited expression of denominational structures to the very core and health of the person. As an example, meditation has been used in many settings within the work place, in prisons, and by individuals in their personal lives. I have had the honor to teach meditation technics in all of these settings. In every situation the results showed participants who were more relaxed, better able to cope with difficult clients or situations, were more productive during the low hours of work and a more content work force. This is just one program which has proven benefical to employers and employees alike.
Spiritual Wholeness Consulting Inc. has also the experience and ability to train staff as peer counsellors (EAP). This is a program which a growing number of employers are finding to be helpful to their businesses and have decreased the absenteeism of their work force. Employees benefit from this program by having people who understand their situation close at hand and can find guidance and advice on how they can obtain the professional help they may need.
In an interview with Bill Moyers, Rachael Naomi Remen founder and director of the Institute for the Study of Health and Illness and author of the Human Patient, expresses her belief of what is the ultimate important thing in life:
"Being alive, which is not a matter of length, but of moment to moment. Being alive is being aware, being in touch and moved and changed, being able to respond rather then to react, being able to see and hear. Several of my patients have had near-death experiences. In one case, the woman told me that she came away from that experience with an awareness that the purpose of life was not about being a doctor or a mother or creative or smart or rich, but to grow in wisdom and learn to love better. And that's all."
We at Spiritual Wholeness want everyone to experience more wisdom and more love. This we believe comes as we take a spiritual journey to our personal centre. As we understand ourselves better we learn to appreciate life better and love ourselves better. As we love ourselves with a holistic healthy perspective we can love others better.
